To join tubes end-to-end joint pins (also called spigots) or sleeve couplers are used, or both together. Only right angle couplers and swivel couplers can be used to fix tube in a ‘load bearing connection’. Single couplers are not load bearing couplers and have no design capacity. Apart from these three basic materials there is a need for ladders, ropes, anchor ties, sheeting etc.

Since scaffolding need to be very strong and stable, a good foundation is important. The scaffolding should be able to carry the load as well as spread it evenly. The working platform also needs to be strong and stable so as to carry the load.

Once a proper scaffolding has been erected, half the job is done as it will make working, repairing or constructing much easier.

My daughter and her roommate put bamboo baskets to good use when designing the scheme of their first apartment. They are an inexpensive and practical way to give your home a stylish oriental theme.

When my daughter moved in to her first apartment with a girlfriend after college she was keen to make her mark on the dcor. The girls each had some basic bedroom furniture and purchased a few items for the lounge and dining area. They were both working but having to pay off student loans left them with very little to spend on decorating. Yet they were keen to decorate the apartment to reflect their personalities rather than house a collection of ill-matching cast-offs from friends and relatives.

They spent a few weeks getting the place in order before asking us over for dinner. Knowing shed always liked bamboo baskets I chose one that I filled with towels and toiletries to give her as a house warming gift. She laughed as soon as she saw me at the door with it: I didnt know what was so funny until I walked into the living room. They had picked a number of bamboo baskets and used them to decorate the room as they are both practical and cheap. My daughter and her roommate had also carried this theme around the room by dressing the floor with grass mats used as area rugs and finishing off with bamboo placemats on the dining table.

She was eager to show me her bedroom, where she had also followed eastern inspiration for the design. She had selected three feet tall, vase-shaped bamboo baskets that she was using as lamp stands, with a circular piece of glass on top to create a flat surface for bedside lamps and alarm clock. She had also chosen more bamboo baskets in her closet to sort her laundry in and use as a hamper.

They had yet to start making their mark on the bathroom when we visited. The gift basket I had brought was the first decorative item to go in that room, and seemed to be in keeping with the rest of the apartment. As it was very much neutral it would go with any color scheme they end up selecting.

I know from experience that there is nothing quite like being able to make your mark on your first home with your own earnings. My daughter has impeccable taste and I know that as her career develops she will be able to continue working on her design scheme.

When I was kid at school back in the seventies we weren’t allowed to use calculators on the assumption that reliance on them would make us dumber in math skills. When I look back now I think we were already pretty dumb in math anyway: it took us a long time to do things like long division using a routine method that we had memorized only because the teacher had ruthlessly rammed it through our heads enough time. We were supposed to know the multiplication table on sight lickety split, but only a rare kid did, and we would think she was an Einstein or something.

The fact is, humans are dumb at math and always will be. That is precisely why many ages ago the Chinese invented the abacus and why we in the computer age came up with one of the first truly useful gadgets- the pocket calculator.

The fact that we come up with tools to perform tasks that are cumbersome and slow for us shows that we are smart and getting smarter all the time. Honestly, if computers disappeared completely from the earth tomorrow, don’t you think we’d learn long division again in no time? We should be grateful then that we won’t have to but in secure in knowing that we could.

People tend to confuse recreation with stupidity. Sure, we can spend lots of time on inane games and just messing around on the Internet with our computers. Even though it costs an arm and a leg, we can have trivial conversations with friends on our cell phone. But humans are also competitive by nature. We will become, as a species, more and more skilled at computers and will achieve amazing results. Computers are forcing us to understand more and think more abstractly. We are getting smarter, not dumber.
